6 PFAS ELECTRONICS STATISTICS ON ‘FOREVER CHEMICALS’ AND HOW THEY THREATEN THE INDUSTRY

The electronics industry is facing one of its biggest regulatory challenges as global agencies start closing in on PFAS ‘Forever Chemical’ use. We’ve compiled 6 PFAS electronics statistics to help you and your development teams understand the latest impacts on part selection and use.

TAIWAN EARTHQUAKE IMPACT ON SEMICONDUCTOR SUPPLY CHAIN

7.4 magnitude earthquake shook Taiwan on Wednesday, threatening the supply chain for 92% of the globe’s advanced semiconductors. The quake struck at around 8 am local time just 11 miles southwest of Hualien City. Semiconductor manufacturers such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC) halted production and evacuated plants after the quake.

Taiwan is home to 60% of all semiconductor manufacturing. These semiconductor facilities are equipped with top-tier capabilities for various stages of semiconductor production, including fabrication, processes, assembly, packaging, and testing.

Electronics manufacturers are increasingly feeling the pressure to measure and understand the impact the carbon emissions of their products and manufacturing operations have on the environment. Regulators around the globe are calling for more transparency from companies when it comes to more indirect manufacturing operations.

EPA BANS CHRYSOTILE ASBESTOS UNDER TSCA

On March 18th, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned chrysotile asbestos, the last form of asbestos used in the United States, under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Its use goes beyond construction and is still used in electronics and automotive applications. Chrysotile asbestos, or white asbestos, makes up 95% of the commercial use of asbestos in the United States. The rule prohibits ongoing uses of the only known form of asbestos currently imported, processed, and distributed in the U.S. The EPA issued the ruling to protect people from lung cancer, mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, laryngeal cancer, and other health problems caused by asbestos exposure.

SVHC CANDIDATE LIST UPDATE 2025

On June 25 , 2025, The European Chemical Agency (ECHA) added an additional 3 hazardous chemicals to the substances of very high concern (SVHC) Candidate List. The second update for 2025 brings the total number of substances on the SVHC Candidate List to 250.

RARE EARTH ELEMENTS: FINDING COMPONENTS THAT MINIMIZE IMPACTS FROM TRADE RESTRICTIONS

The supply of rare earth elements that are critical to manufacturing electronic components is being constrained by trade restrictions. The volatility and nuances of these trade restrictions are creating a need for rework and multi-scenario planning for supply-chain managers, procurement, component engineers and design engineers alike. Visibility into the materials that go into your components is critical to assessing the potential impact of these trade restrictions and finding alternatives.

PROPOSED NEW TARIFFS THREATEN HIGHER ELECTRONIC COMPONENT PRICES IN 2025

New tariffs proposed by the incoming Trump Administration could lead to higher electronic component prices in 2025. President-elect Donald Trump has announced he would impose new tariffs when he takes office, targeting the United States’ biggest trade partners – Canada, Mexico, and China. While the final tariffs could change before the President-elect takes office, Trump said he would
implement a 25% tariff on all products imported from Canada and Mexico. The new administration would also add an additional 10% to existing tariffs on imports from China.

NAVIGATING CHANGING TARIFFS IN THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS SUPPLY CHAIN

Recently, rapid changes to tariff policy have created new challenges for manufacturers navigating the electronic components supply chain. In recent weeks, supply chain and procurement managers have had to assess the impact of both broad-sweeping and industry-targeted tariffs, a task made more difficult by ongoing changes to tariff rates, exemptions, and effective dates.
With so much change in such a short period of time, it is critical for technology manufacturers to understand where their parts come from and what alternative components can be substituted into their designs. Many are altering supply chain strategies for managing increased costs from the changing tariff rates around the globe.

UFLPA ENTITY LIST 2024 (UYGHUR) UPDATE ADDS 34 NEW COMPANIES

The latest UFLPA Entity List 2024 update is out, and 5 new companies were added on August 9, 2024. The US Department of Homeland Security is continuing its crackdown on the use of Forced Labor in China by adding to the UFLPA Entity List in 2024.
